PARENT/CHILD AND ADAPTED AQUATICS CLASSES - SUMMER SESSION

Welcome to JCC MetroWest Parent & Child and Adapted Aquatics

For each level of Parent and Child Aquatics, our instructors follow a plan to introduce new swimming and water safety skills that are developmentally appropriate for infants and young children.

Routines and the familiar are extremely important to your young swimmer. Each class uses toys, songs, fun and games to keep the children engaged and enjoying the water experience, all the while teaching them basic aquatic skills.

Little DippersParent-Child Class 
6-18 mos. & Parent

Great experiences and fun activities teach infants to feel comfortable in the water. Parents learn to hold and support infants properly in the water. Infants will explore breath control, floating, and changing body position while “moving” through the water. Rubber pants AND swim diaper required under swimsuit.

Provides experiences and activities for children to:

  • Learn to have permission before entering the water.
  • Learn how to enter and exit the water in a safe manner.
  • Feel comfortable in the water.
  • Explore submerging to the mouth, nose and eyes and fully submerging.
  • Explore buoyancy on the front and back position.
  • Change body position in the water.
  • Learn how to play safely.
  • Experience wearing a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket.
  • Plus age-appropriate water safety topics.

 


Little Dippers & Flippers
6-36 mos. & Parent

This is a combined class filled with great experiences and fun activities teach infants and young swimmers to feel comfortable in the water. Parents learn to hold and support infants and young children properly in the water. Infants will explore breath control, floating, and changing body position while "moving" through the water. Rubber pants AND swim diaper required under swimsuit. This class is not offered during the Summer Session.

 


Little Flippers
18-36 mos. & Parent

Great experiences and fun activities teach young swimmers to feel comfortable in the water. Special techniques using parental assistance teach children water safety, safe entry, kicking, and arm movements. Swimmers build on breath control, floating, and changing body position while "moving" through the water. Rubber pants AND swim diaper required under swimsuit.

Builds upon the skills learned in Little Dippers and provides experiences and activities for children to:

  • Establish expectation for adult supervision.
  • Learn more ways to enter and exit the water in a safe manner.
  • Explore submerging in a rhythmic pattern.
  • Glide on the front and back with assistance.
  • Perform combined stroke on front and back with assistance.
  • Change body position in the water.
  • Experience wearing a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket in the water.
  • Plus age-appropriate water safety topics.

Little Skippers
2 1/2-3 1/2 yrs & Parent

2 1/2–4 yrs & Parent

An advanced class for the swimmer who is ready to develop basic swimming skills- bobbing, floating, gliding, and combined arm and leg movements. Parental participation is required. Rubber pants AND swim diapers are required under the child's swimsuit. Helps children gain greater independence in their skills and develop more comfort in and around water.

  • Enter water using ramp, steps or side
  • Exit water using ladder, steps or side
  • Blow bubbles through mouth and nose
  • Submerge mouth, nose and eyes
  • Open eyes underwater and retrieve submerged objects
  • Front glide and recover to a vertical position

Mom_and_Child_BarbellSilly Swans

A transitional swim class designed to promote independence. Parents must be prepared to participate in the water but are phased out after the first few lessons. Rubber pants AND swim diapers are required under the child's swimsuit if not toilet trained. Orients children to the aquatic environment and helps them gain basic aquatic skills.

Club Splash
3-5 yrs & Parent

Fee:
JCC Member:$208/8 sess. • Guest: $256/8 sess.

Club Splash is a 60-minute swim program for children ages 3-5 with special needs and their parent/caregiver.

This 8 week program* will feature a 10-minute free swim warm-up, 40 minutes of instruction with a WSI, and a 10-minute free swim cool down. Children will:

Lifelong Learning

Life Long Learning

A Learning Center sponsored by

  • National Council of Jewish Women Essex County Section
  • JCC MetroWest Center for Adult Enrichment

Our Life Long Learning continuing education program features a variety of courses taught by university professors.

Formal education is not required for participation. The courses maintain the highest academic standards. Anyone age 55 and above may participate for a nominal fee.

Program includes Fall and Spring semesters, special mini-semesters, film series and one-day forums on individual subjects.

Co-sponsored with the National Council of Jewish Women, Essex County Section.

Personal Training In The Pool

Discover the Difference
that Water Training Makes!

Group Personal Training in the Pool - Sign up for Anti-Gravity!

Whether you are looking to improve your cardiovascular endurance or rehabilitate a chronic source of pain, working out in the water is the answer. Making aquatic exercise part of your training program allows you to work longer in your training zone and use more fat as a fuel source.

Water's buoyancy helps release you from the forces of gravity and lets your body move in ways that it could not move on land. Participants will enjoy the versatile workouts in the water - swimming knowledge is not required!

Take advantage of these Group Personal Training in the Pool Sessions and get an individually designed program that includes both resistance and aerobic training while reducing direct impact on the joints.(3 person minimum-5 person maximum per session).
All sessions are 50 minutes.

Kids Gym Enrichment Classes

Fitness Made Fun for Kids

For ages 12 months - 5 years

Kids Gym enrichment Classes help children achieve their physical and social goals as they grow in their own way, at their own pace while having fun!

Classes are designed to enhance your child's physical skills, including fine and gross motor skills, spatial awareness, coordination, balance, agility, flexibility, and sports preparation. All of this, is achieved in a non-competitive, fun atmosphere.

Adventures in Gym

Supervised open gym time for children in the 2+ classes. Children will be given balls, hoops, scooters, beanbags, frisbees, bowling pins and more to use. Slides, tunnels, balance beams, and obstacle courses will also be explored.

All Sorts of Sports

If it is a sport they will play it.  If you can say it, they will play it.  If you can kick it, hit it, or throw it, they will play it.

Basketball and T-Ball

Learn the skills for basketball and t-ball with fun drills and game-like situations.

Gym Games

This class includes sports and games. Learn the basics of team sports and also play fun games including tag games, running games and more.

Gym Jam I and II

Children (with help from Parent) jump, climb, hang, tumble, slide and balance their way to fitness. Confidence, coordination and socialization develop through circle games and group play with parachutes, ball and hoops. Sneakers required for all.

Gym Potpourri

Something new and exciting each class. Children will have fun playing gym games, obstacle courses and using balls, hoops, parachutes, bean bags and more.

Gymmie Bears

Gymnastics class designed for the preschooler. Learn forward rolls, backward rolls, handstands, cartwheels and more. Class also includes use of balance beam, uneven bars and vaulting.

Hoops Clinic

This class will incorporate unique skills and drills for basketball. Class time will focus on: shooting technique, dribbling, passing, offensive/defensive play, positioning, and game strategies. All participants will compete in atual game settings.

Individual Sports and Tennis Too

Enjoy our indoor miniature golf course. Bowl a strike and a spare. Run and jump on our indoor track. Play tennis with small rackets, low nets and foam tennis balls.

Kinderkarate

This class was developed to meet the needs and interests of preschoolers entering the martial arts. Students learn self-control, respect of others and discipline, coordination, flexibility, strength, and conflict resolution through the use of nonaggression. Class size will be limited.

Kids Yoga

It's fun and creative. It builds self-esteem and confidence. It increases concentration and attention. It's Kids Yoga! Through music, games, stories, and laughter, your child will discover the magic of yoga.

Lacrosse Clinic

This class will incorporate unique skills and drills to introduce your child to the sports of lacrosse. Class time will focus on: footwork/agility, stick work, proper throwing, shooting and passing and game play.  All participants will compete in actual game settings.

Soccer

Dribbling, passing, shooting! Learn the skills for soccer with fun drills and game-like situations.

Soccer and Basketball

Learn, practice and improve your soccer and basketball skills through fun drills and game like situations. Dribbling! Passing! Shooting! Teamwork!  Members only.  If the class is full, please call 973-530-3423 to be placed on the wait list.

Soccer and Flag Football

Improve your soccer, and flag football skills through fun drills with an emphasis on teamwork and plenty of time for games!

Sports and Games

Expose your child to a variety of different sports including t-ball and basketball. Fun drills and game like situations. This class also includes fun games such as tag games, running games, cooperative games and more.

Sports Club for Girls and Boys

Introduce your child to a variety of sports including flag football, basketball, t-ball and more. Classes will include drills to teach children the basics of these sports in a fun, stimulating atmosphere.

Tennis

Children learn to play tennis with smaller rackets, lower nets and foam tennis balls.

Tumbling Tots

Introduce your child to tumbling. Class will include forward rolls, backward rolls, head stands, handstands, and cartwheels. class will include obstacle courses as well.

Zumba

Simple dances and creative movements done to Latin music in a fun and educational environment.

Welcome to JCC MetroWest Preschool Aquatics!

Congratulations! Enrolling your child in our Preschool Aquatics Programs enters them into a journey to learn how to be safe in, on and around the water and to swim well. The American Red Cross Preschool Aquatics program consists of three levels of progressive swim instruction appropriate for children of preschool age.

For every level of Preschool Aquatics, our instructors follow a plan to introduce new swimming and safety skills that are developmentally appropriate for young children. Preschool Aquatics puts the "fun" in fundamentals. Each class is loaded with enjoyable, engaging and challenging activities that motivate children to want to perform and learn to swim.

Evaluations are needed for all NEW Preschool participants to ensure proper placement in the appropriate swim level. All evaluations are complementary 15 minute sessions.

Helps children start to gain basic swimming propulsive skills to be comfortable in and around water. Further development of swimming skills started in previous levels through additional guided practice. Swimmers learn to effectively coordinate simultaneous and alternating arm and leg actions on the front and back. Adjustment to deep water, along with additional water safety skills is taught.

  • Enter water by jumping in. 
  • Fully submerge and hold breath
  • Bobbing
  • Rotary breathing
  • Front, jellyfish and tuck floats
  • Front and back floats or glide and recover to a vertical position

Red Cross Instructor Level Courses - Water Safety Instructor & Lifeguard Instructor

Becoming a Red Cross Training Instructor

Being a Red Cross instructor is a fulfilling and rewarding experience. 

At JCC MetroWest Instructor training courses include:

  • Water Safety Instructor (WSI - teach Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Classes)

  • Lifeguard Instructor (LGI - teach Red Cross Lifeguarding, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuers and Healthcare Providers, Administering Emergency Oxygen and Bloodborne Pathogens Training Courses)

Registration for this class will close on Monday, June 9 to allow all participants time to complete the preskills and then register with the Red Cross and complete the first on line session prior to Monday, June 16.

Preskills Test: Monday,June 9. (Meet on the Pool Deck at 5pm) Upon successful completion of required skills, students will be certified to teach a variety of classes for infants through adults. 

Prerequisites:

  • Participants must be 16 by the completion of the course. Please bring proof of age to the Preskills Session.
  • Demonstrate the ability to perform the following swimming skills:

    • 25 yards each of Front Crawl, Back Crawl, Breast Stroke, Elementary Backstroke, and Side Stroke.
    • 15 yards of Butterfly.

Maintain position on back in deep water and treading water for 1 minute each.

Attendance at all sessions is mandatory.


Lifeguard Instructor
Ages 17-Adult 
May Class - Instructor Trainers - Kathy Torre and Bob Haber

JCC Member $275 • Guest $350 (does not include the $35 registration fee that is paid to the American Red Cross.)

This course is for those who wish to train and certify others in Lifeguard Training and CPR/AED for Lifeguards. Will include training in AED, Emergency Oxygen, and Preventing Disease Transmission. Participants must be 17 by the completion of the course. Please bring proof of age to first class. You will need to bring a modest swim suit and towels.
Prerequisite - Fundamentals of Instructor Training (FIT)

Class Dates:
Tuesday - Friday, May 27 to 30, 2014 
10am to 5pm

Prerequisites for Instructor Candidates

  • Be at least 17 years old on or before the last day of the instructor course. 
  • Possess one of the following:

    • A current American Red Cross certification for Lifeguarding/First Aid and either and American Red Cross certification for CPR/AD for the professional Rescuer or an American Red Cross certification for CPR/AED for Lifeguards. 
    • An equivalent certification from another organization. 
  • Successfuly complete the Online Session for the Lifeguarding Instructor course, which consists of the following:

    • Orientation to the American Red Cross
    • Orientation to the Lifeguarding Instructor Course and Precourse Exam
  • Successfully complete the Precourse Session. 
  • Obtain the Lifeguarding Instructor's Manual after you have successfully completed the Precourse Session.

Basketball

More information on our Basketball Leagues can be found on our Basketball pages - but here's a quick overview.

JCC/Sports Universe Slam Dunk League

Grades K - 4

For the second year in a row, JCC MetroWest and Sports Universe have teamed up for an instructional, fun and competitive basketball league for boys and girls in grades K-4.  The competitive league is comprised of a 12 week season.  The program will begin with a two week clinic, run by our staff.  Player's skills will be evaluated and improved.  Upon the completion of the clinics, players will be divided into balanced teams and coaches will be assigned. 

The Slam Dunk League will involve seven games.  Games played on Sunday and weekly team practices held by coaches and monitored by staff.  There will be a round robin playoff with all teams qualifying for the final two weeks, crowning a champion.  T-Shirts and certificates for all participants.  Medals for runners up and trophies for champions. 

All children will improve their skills, receive equal playing time, and enjoy the competition of our league.

Hoop Heaven Spring Basketball Leagues

The JCC will enter teams into Hoop Heaven's Spring Basketball League based on interest. Games will begin in March and will run through mid June. Games will be played once a week at Hoop Heaven in Whippany and practices will be held 1-2 times a week at the JCC in West Orange.

Separate teams for boys and girls are formed as follows:

Grades 5 & 6
Grade 7 & 8
Grade 9 & 10
Grade 11 & 12

Hoop Heaven has a variety of league levels from recreation through competitive and each team will be placed according to their ability.

Fee includes: 8 regular season games and playoffs, practices, high school certified referees, scorekeepers and reversible mesh jersey.

Winter Travel Basketball Leagues

The JCC Teen Travel League is committed to enhancing ties between the JCC and surrounding communities. We will play other Essex and Morris County teams on Sundays at Hoop Heaven in Whippany. Practices will be held one night during the week at the Cooperman JCC in West Orange. All levels of play are welcome and teams will be entered into the appropriate age divisions. We are going for the championship!

Basketball

This class will review the basics of basketball while also teaching offensive and defensive skills, proper rebounding and positioning, footwork and game like-situations.  This class is perfect for kids participating in the JCCs basketball leagues.

Beginning and Intermediate Golf Lessons

Come on out on the weekend and learn the fundamentals of golf in a fun relaxed atmosphere. We will cover the grip, aim, and stance. Through drills and exercises, the overall swing, including backswing, downswing, and follow-through will be acquired. Short game, including chipping, pitching, and putting will be worked on. Safety and etiquette will be stressed. Discussion will also touch on golf lingo (birdie, par, and bogey), equipment and rules.
Course taught by Lou Ruina, experienced teacher and golf pro at Millburn Municipal and East Orange golf courses of Short Hills, and Anchor Golfland in Whippany. Equipment will be provided, bring clubs if you have.   Classes will be held at the East Orange Golf Course in Short Hills in the spring, summer, and early fall. 

Kinderkarate

This class was developed to meet the needs and interests of preschoolers entering the martial arts. Students learn self-control, respect of others, discipline, coordination, flexibility, strength and conflict resolution through the use of non-aggression. Class size will be limited..

Intermediate Karate

Continue the development of body awareness and practical self-defense techniques, behavior and strategies. Prerequisite Karate.

Hakoah Sports Club and Hakoah Junior Sports Club

NHL Street

Exciting new indoor street hockey program sponsored by NHL.  NHL provides equipotent and staff training manuals.  Devils alumnus and mascot will visit one during the semester.  Devils promotional items given away.  Program led by JCC staff.

Soccer

The specific training elements covered in this class include:  Individual technical development: focuses on individual skills, increases the level at which each player understands the game and involves the full range of individual skills, experimenting with positions in scrimmage games.  Enhances the ability of the players to pass, dribble, turn, control, head and shoot.
Decision making: work towards helping players make their own decisions more quickly and more consistently enabling them to perfom better at higher levels.
Physical Preparation:  all round physical development.  Incorporating speed agility work, speed hurdles, parachutes.  Designed to make a quicker, stronger and more agile player.
Evaluation:  involves players providing a self-evaluation of their progress analyzing their performance of skills.  The goal is to help players understand how to evaluate and assess components of their performance to improve their play.

Stick Sports

This class will feature a variety of sports including waffle ball, lacrosse, hockey and tennis. If your child loves sports and being active then this is the class for them. Appropriate skills will be taught for each sport. Class will emphasize teamwork and having FUN!

Tennis

Students are taught ground strokes, volleys and serves. Scorekeeping is introduced by playing singles and doubles. Other games are played to build motor skills and provide healthy competition.

Yoga

It's fun and creative. It builds self-esteem and confidence. It increases concentration and attention. It's Kids Yoga! Through music, games, stories, and laughter, your child will discover the magic of yoga. Classes divided according to age.

Zumba

Simple dances and creative movements done to Latin music in a fun and educational environment.

Preskills Test - Thursday, August 7, 2014 at 5:30pm (please meet on the pool deck). Registration is required. Once you pass the preskills we will email you a deep link so you can register for the online portion of the course. At this time you will need to use a credit card and pay a $35 nonrefundable registration fee to the Red Cross and we will process the balance of your payment to the JCC as follows:

JCC Member $275 • Guest $350 (does not include the $35 registration fee that is paid to the American Red Cross.)

Blended learning combines online learning with on-site skills sessions where you will practice skills and demonstrate competency. Please plan to complete the initial online lessons of your training at least two days prior to your first on-site skills session which is scheduled for Monday, August 11, 2014 - 1pm to 6pm.

In order to complete the online portion of the course you MUST register with the American Red Cross after you pass the preskills session  

Class Sessions -

Monday, Tuesday & Thursday - August 11, 12, 14, 18 & 21- 5:30pm to 9:30pm
Sunday, August 17 - 1pm to 6pm

   Prerequisites:         

  • Must be 15 yrs old by the last scheduled date of the course.

Pre-skills (for both full and review classes):

  • Continuously swim 300 yds. demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may use front crawl, breast stroke or a combination of both but swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Swim goggles may be used.
  • Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs. Candidates should place their hands under the armpits.
  • Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds.
  • Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed.
  • Surface dive, feet-first or head-first, to a depth of 7-10 feet to retrieve a 10 lb. object.
  • Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object and keeping the face at or near the surface so the are able to get a breath. Candidates can not swim the distance underwater. Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.

Completion of all on line materials prior to each class and attendance at all sessions is mandatory.

Certification: American Red Cross certificate for Lifeguard Training/First Aid/CPR/AED: valid for 2 years.

NEW - Blended Learning Lifeguard Training Review
Januray 5, 6 & 8, 2015  - Three Day Class

Registration for this class will close on Friday, January 2 to allow all participants time to register with the Red Cross and complete the on line session prior to Monday, Jan 5. Preskills Test: Monday, January 5 at 5:30pm. (Meet on the pool deck) Course Session will follow immediately after the Preskills testing.

Course Sessions:
Monday,Tuesday, & Wednesday, January 5, 6 & 7 from 5:30pm to 9:30pm

Must bring completed on line progress report, current certifications, and pocket mask to the first class.

JCC Member: $120 - Guest $145 (does not include the $27 registration fee that is paid to the American Red Cross.)

All Lifeguard Training Participants will need to bring a modest swim suit and towels.  Attendance at all sessions is mandatory. Please bring water bottles, snacks and lunch if appropriate for your class schedule.

Summer Splash Weekday Preschool & Grade School Aquatics Programs

Summer Splash Weekday Pre-School Aquatics Program

Participants enrolling in our Summer Splash Weekday Programs will be evaluated the first day of class and placed in an appropriate American Red Cross Pre-school Aquatics swim group. Pre-school Aquaitcs Levels 1, 2 or 3.

Guest: $155 for 9 lessons(Session 1)
$173 for 10 lessons (Session 2-4)
JCC Member: $117 for 9 lessons (Session 1)
$130 for 10 lessons (Session 2-4)
