Join us for trips, fun, and excitement during school vacations. December vacations, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, President's Day, Spring Break and more - we've got you covered.

Sports Vacation Programs

Work on and polish the players' skills in soccer and basketball, as well as learning new skills and tactics. All players will have one swim a day as well.

IMPORTANT: Policies and Procedures

  • Programs are open to Members and Guests of the JCC.
  • Cancellation Policy: Cancellations 48 hours prior to a Vacation Program will receive a JCC credit. Cancellations made less than 48 hours prior to a Vacation Program will receive no refund.
  •  There will be a late registration fee of $10.00 if you reigister less than 1 week prior to the Vacation Program date.
  • Please bring a kosher dairy, nut-free lunch each day. Bring a bathering suit and towel when applicable. Space is limited. Cancellations will incur a cancellation fee.
  • Before and After Care is available at no additional fee from 7:30am–6:00pm for all Vacation Programs.
  • Parents who pick up after 6:00pm will be charged $1.00 per minute.
  • Any child who requires a Shadow Counselor must coordinate this arrangement with our Special Needs Director. The Shadow Counselor is paid separately by the parent.
  • Low registration may result in program cancellation.

Dinosaurs Rock

Experience dinosaur fossils like never before. Some items that are 10,000 to over 500 million years old. Kids will be able to see and thouch these items up-close, including the newest additions to the collection, a 9 foot leg of an ice Age Mammoth, genuine Dinosaur Eggs and Dinosaur Footprints puls lots more.

Clay/Ceramics Day

Get in touch with your creative side. Mix and mole; as you bring out your inner Picasso. This day will be filled with using unconventional materials; to make one of a kind master pieces. We will also enjoy swimming and the gym.

Liberty Science Center

See the new "Animation" exhibit; hover in mid air as you create a time-lapse sequence. Visit the cartoon museum of origional cells and collectables and make your own fabulous cartoon creations surrounded by larger-than-life charecters from cartoon network. Experiment with 30 hands-on activities on story boarding, charecter design, drawing techniques, movement, timing, filming, sound, visual effects, and cell layering.

Morris County Connection

The Morris County Connection's mission is building a more cohesive and engaged Jewish community by raising people's awareness of the services available to them in Morris County. The Connection seeks to embrace and cultivate relationships with a broad range of individuals with diverse affiliations, including none at all, and connect them to the Jewish community.

By facilitating collaboration between existing Jewish institutions and programs, the Connection's community-building work will produce communal synergy beneficial to both the constituent organizations and the individuals being served.

Our Camp

Magic, cooking, crafts, science, clay, dance, sewing, chemistry-we have it for your child! Three hours of specialized instruction from professional teachers in their chosen week's adventure, is combined with daily free swim, organized games outside or in our indoor gym, plus a snack to keep them going.

Our Staff

Gaelen Center for the Arts Staff

Carol Berman

 

Carol Berman, a graduate of the University of Miami with a BFA in Performance has spent the better part of her 'grown up' life in the midst of early childhood.  Carol is the Manager of the Gaelen Center For The Arts as well as Director of the JCC MetroWest School of the Arts and Triple Threat Theater Camp and directs all the Children Production Company and Teen Production Company musicals at the Maurice Levin Theater on the campus of the JCC MetroWest in West Orange, NJ.  Carol owns TCW, LLC, an entertainment company for all occasions and a rolodex of classes and experiences for parents/guardians and their favorite youngsters, as well as being a registered and certified Music Together facilitator. Carol Berman teaches and lectures throughout the tri-state area a variety of subjects including You CAN do this:  Learning To Love Music and Movement In The Early Childhood Classroom;  Improv for the Young Actor; Adult Improv; On Camera:  A Way To Self-Esteem, among other high energy classes and lectures.  If all of this wonderful nonsense called "Life" isn't enough - Carol and her three 'boys' reside in Livingston with their new pup Buster, PuffBall, Flappy and the Fish.

Samara Grossman

 

 

 

 

 

Samara Grossman is an actor, choreographer, teaching artist and adventure seeker. She has been on the stage in such roles as "Sarah" in COMPANY; "Catherine" in ARMS AND THE MAN; "Grace/Maggie" in WORKING; "Sally" in A LIE OF THE MIND; "Woman II" in CLOSER THAN EVER and many more throughout the Tri-State area.  As a Choreographer, Samara has worked all over New York and New Jersey at such venues as The Players Theater (OFF BROADWAY), William Paterson University, JCC MetroWest, JCC on the Palisades, the Wayne "Y", the Clifton "Y", Riverdell High School and others. Her teaching as brought her from Westchester to West Orange teaching all forms of Dance (theater dance, choreography, ballet, tap, modern, hip hop, movement for actors); Acting; Musical Theater; Creative Writing; Poetry; Audition Technique and has been known to teach a cooking class here and there. She comes from many years at the NJY Camps and had a stint at the Dr Joy Browne show for CBS as well as Disney Theatricals on Broadway for BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, KING DAVID, the NYC premier of HERCULES and the load in for THE LION KING. Samara attended the Idyllwild Arts Academy for Musical Theater, The American Musical and Dramatic Academy for Musical Theater and received her BA from William Paterson University in English Literature.

Lisa Suss

 

 

 

 

 

Lisa Suss is an arts activist and advocate as well as an active professional artist.  She often serves as an art ahow juror and installs art for art exhibits, homes and corporate spaces.

Lisa spent 8 years as the chairperson of the West Orange Arts Council and was instrumental in the Council's development. She continues to serve on the Arts Council Board of Trustees.  She is a juried member of Exhibitor's Co-op, a well-known artists' exhibiting group which shows in New Jersey and surrounding states and was also a founding member of the Essex County Arts Advisory Board.

As the Visual Arts Manager for JCC MetroWest, she is responsible for programming and managing four exhibition spaces-the Gaelen Galleries at the West Orange and Whippany's Laurenberg Family Center, as well as the Arts Lobby and Steiner Court Showcases and Roland Exhibition Corridor in West Orange.  She is also the coordinator for the annual Gaelen Juried Arts Show & Sale.

 

Michelle Dreiblatt

Michele Dreiblatt is the Director of the New Jersey Jewish Film Festival, a part of the Gaelen Center for the Arts, JCC MetroWest. Prior to this position, Michele was the Cultural Arts Director at the JCC of Central New Jersey, where she expanded their Jewish Film Festival, introduced new programming in the areas of music, art and cooking and played a key role in sponsorship and fundraising initiatives.

Formerly, Michele was a marketing communications professional for corporations and public relations agencies. She is a graduate of the Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications.

Michele lives in Randolph. She has three incredible children, one awesome husband and her fun-loving chocolate cockapoo, Lucie.

She is a film lover both on and off the job.

Meet the School of the Arts

Janet Boltax 

 

 

 

 

Janet Boltax is a figurative and portrait artist who has had solo exhibits in New Jersey, New York and VIrginia; and her work is in private collections throughout the United States.  She received a B.F.A. from the State University of New York at Buffalo, and continued her studies at the Art Student's League of NYC.  In addition to teaching at the JCC, she is also an oil painting instructor at the Montclair Museum and the Montclair Adult School.


Catherine Black 

 

 

 

A graduate of the Boston Conservatory of Music with a BFA in Musical Theatre and a minor in Dance, Catherine has appeared nationally in tours of Camelot with Robert Goulet, My Fair Lady, and Brigadoon with John Schneider.  During Brigadoon, she worked with Rob Marshall, director of the films Nine and Chicago.

Catherine has also performed internationally singing and dancing her way through Asia and the South Pacific.  Favorite rolls include, Amy in Company and Johanna in Sweeny Todd.  Other regional credits include Joseph, Evita, Phantom, Guys and Dolls, Annie, Gentlemen prefer Blondes and Mame.  She feels lucky to have worked with such stars as Andrea McArdle, Loretta Switt, Debbie Boone, Vic Damone, Barbara Eden, and Gary Sandy. 

Catherine currently teaches Zumba and the Dance series at the JCC and is proud to be a new member of the Arts department.  She is married to musical instrument mouthpiece designer Greg Black. Together, they have a wonderful little boy Tyler and a golden retriever named Catcher.

 

 

Vivian Olshen

 

 

 

Vivian Olshen, long time resident of Livingston, teaches oil and acrylic painting and is leader/instructor of the popular Art Lover's Odyssey, a museum & Gallery course, at the JCC.

Born in Brooklyn, Vivian began her professional art studies at Pratt Institute where she earned a Bachelor of Science Degree.  Further study at Montclair State College resulted in a Master of Arts degree. She has also studied at the prestigious Art Students League. Her teachers have included Jonathon Silver, Carmen Cicero, Jacob Lawrence, Philip Pearlstein & George McNeil.  She has received numerous awards for her work (paintings, prints, drawings).  Her work can be found in private collections in the U.S. and Canada.

In the painting studio, Vivian encourages each student to find his/her means of expression, be it representation or abstraction, and she works with each student on a one to one, at his/her level of ability, to find his/her particular style.

The Art Lover's Odyssey provides an opportunity for interested persons to learn about the New York art scene and then actually visit the exhibitions discussed in class. Emphasis is on understanding the artist's motives as well as biographical material and placing work in an historical context.

Michaelle Weinger

 

 

 

 

Michaelle Weinger lives in Montclair, NJ and has been a member of the JCC staff for the past year, teaching clay and multimedia as well as fabric and sewing to youngsters. Prior to joining the JCC, Michaelle was an outreach teacher at the Montclair Art Museum for three seasons, helping to make art come alive for grade- and middle-school students across Essex County. Michaelle is a former PTA President in the Montclair school system. While there she established new "rites of passage" traditions for the students at Rand Elementary.

Michaelle has been working with clay for the last seven years. Her latest mode of expression is the animal world. Her art has been displayed at Montclair Public Library and the JCC in West Orange. Michaelle, who has been sewing all her life, is also an accomplished professional gardener.

School of the Arts Celebration!

Come see all fine & performing arts students celebrate their developing talents from months of class instruction. 

Dance students will perform show-stopping productions in jazz, tap, ballet and hip hop.

Art students will exhibit works from mediums including ceramics, watercolor, acrylic and mixed media.
