  • Registration opens 73 hours prior to the start of class.
  • Please register online at
  • If you can no longer attend a class you registered for, you must cancel your booking.
  • Booking cancellations must be made 24 hours prior to the start of class. If you fail to remove yourself with at least 24 hours notice, a warning will be issued. After three warnings, self-registrations priveleges will be suspended for 90-days.
  • In the event of a member cancellation, the first individual on the waiting list will automatically be notified.
  • If you do not show up for class but fail to remove yourself from the roster, you will be given a warning. After not attending three classes you have registered for, you will lose your self-registration privileges for a period of 90 days. Privileges will then be reinstated.
  • Due to the limited space in our classes, please refrain from signing up for back-to-back sessions and the same type of class on repetitive days. 
  • Please contact Fitness Reception at 973-530-3416 if you are having difficulty using Xpiron.

Margulis Gymnasium Rules Margulis Gymnasium Rules

  1. Shirts and other proper athletic attire must be worn at all times.
  2. Wear athletic shoes only. No black or hard-soled shoes that leave marks are allowed.
  3. Food and drink prohibited. (Water bottles are allowed)
  4. Children 12 years of age and younger must be accompanied by an adult.
  5. Be considerate of yourself and others. Profanity, fighting, excessive yelling, and unnecessary aggressiveness will not be tolerated.
  6. Gymnastics equipment and the gym closet are off limits.
  7. Please return any balls that you use to the ball cart when finished.
  8. Keep balls and other equipment away from ceilings, lights, and other electrical devices.
  9. Open Gym Schedule will vary by season and program. Please check the current Gym Schedule posted outside the gym on the Communication Hub and on line at
  10. Please leave all gym bags and personal belongings locked in the appropriate locker room.
  11. Only sports equipment is permitted on gym floor.
  12. Members must show their card and guests must show their pass to the Gym Reception Staff.
  13. The Sports & Recreation staff reserves the right to alter the Gym Schedule if necessary. Priority gym usage: classes, leagues, special events, and open play.
  14. The Sports & Recreation Supervisor on duty has the final say on all Gymnasium related matters.

Track Rules

  1. Only rubber soled shoes or sneakers permitted.
  2. Walkers stay to the inside. Joggers pass on the outside.
  3. No stopping on the track. Rest at the corners.
  4. Children 12 years of age and younger must be accompanied by an adult.
    Please be courteous, allowing others to pass.


Basketball Court Rules

  1. Games played on a "First-come, First-serve" basis.
  2. All games will be played to 11 (win by one). Winners stay on.
  3. Players are to call their own fouls.
  4. Courteous court behavior is required by all players at all times.
  5. Foul language or physical confrontation is strictly prohibited.
  6. When there are two games being played, the first team of five waiting will play on the first court that opens up.

Gaelen Center for the Arts Staff

Carol Berman


Carol Berman, a graduate of the University of Miami with a BFA in Performance has spent the better part of her 'grown up' life in the midst of early childhood.  Carol is the Manager of the Gaelen Center For The Arts as well as Director of the JCC MetroWest School of the Arts and Triple Threat Theater Camp and directs all the Children Production Company and Teen Production Company musicals at the Maurice Levin Theater on the campus of the JCC MetroWest in West Orange, NJ.  Carol owns TCW, LLC, an entertainment company for all occasions and a rolodex of classes and experiences for parents/guardians and their favorite youngsters, as well as being a registered and certified Music Together facilitator. Carol Berman teaches and lectures throughout the tri-state area a variety of subjects including You CAN do this:  Learning To Love Music and Movement In The Early Childhood Classroom;  Improv for the Young Actor; Adult Improv; On Camera:  A Way To Self-Esteem, among other high energy classes and lectures.  If all of this wonderful nonsense called "Life" isn't enough - Carol and her three 'boys' reside in Livingston with their new pup Buster, PuffBall, Flappy and the Fish.

Samara Grossman






Samara Grossman is an actor, choreographer, teaching artist and adventure seeker. She has been on the stage in such roles as "Sarah" in COMPANY; "Catherine" in ARMS AND THE MAN; "Grace/Maggie" in WORKING; "Sally" in A LIE OF THE MIND; "Woman II" in CLOSER THAN EVER and many more throughout the Tri-State area.  As a Choreographer, Samara has worked all over New York and New Jersey at such venues as The Players Theater (OFF BROADWAY), William Paterson University, JCC MetroWest, JCC on the Palisades, the Wayne "Y", the Clifton "Y", Riverdell High School and others. Her teaching as brought her from Westchester to West Orange teaching all forms of Dance (theater dance, choreography, ballet, tap, modern, hip hop, movement for actors); Acting; Musical Theater; Creative Writing; Poetry; Audition Technique and has been known to teach a cooking class here and there. She comes from many years at the NJY Camps and had a stint at the Dr Joy Browne show for CBS as well as Disney Theatricals on Broadway for BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, KING DAVID, the NYC premier of HERCULES and the load in for THE LION KING. Samara attended the Idyllwild Arts Academy for Musical Theater, The American Musical and Dramatic Academy for Musical Theater and received her BA from William Paterson University in English Literature.

Lisa Suss






Lisa Suss is an arts activist and advocate as well as an active professional artist.  She often serves as an art ahow juror and installs art for art exhibits, homes and corporate spaces.

Lisa spent 8 years as the chairperson of the West Orange Arts Council and was instrumental in the Council's development. She continues to serve on the Arts Council Board of Trustees.  She is a juried member of Exhibitor's Co-op, a well-known artists' exhibiting group which shows in New Jersey and surrounding states and was also a founding member of the Essex County Arts Advisory Board.

As the Visual Arts Manager for JCC MetroWest, she is responsible for programming and managing four exhibition spaces-the Gaelen Galleries at the West Orange and Whippany's Laurenberg Family Center, as well as the Arts Lobby and Steiner Court Showcases and Roland Exhibition Corridor in West Orange.  She is also the coordinator for the annual Gaelen Juried Arts Show & Sale.

Miriam Gardin, Director NJJFF


Miriam is an arts manager and artist with an extensive background in live performance. Through her producing company, Mpresentations, Miriam produced and directed the world premiere of The Divine Mr. Average by Tim Carlson in D.C.’s 2006 Capital Fringe Festival, and is working on new projects. Previously, Miriam served as Development Director for The Ensemble Studio Theatre in NYC. Before that, she worked for Situation Interactive, providing marketing and advertising services to theatrical clients such as Disney Theatrical Group. She has also worked for Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts, Performing Arts Chicago, and Young Judaea. In Israel, Miriam was the artistic and managing director of Center Stage Theatre, producing, directing, and performing in stage and film productions. Through her company Mitzvah Coach, Miriam privately coaches B’nai Mitzvah students and parents in presentation skills. She holds an MFA in performing arts management from Brooklyn College and a BFA in theatre performance from the Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University.

JCC/Sports Universe Slam Dunk League

Grades K - 4

For the second year in a row, JCC MetroWest and Sports Universe have teamed up for an instructional, fun and competitive basketball league for boys and girls in grades K-4.  The competitive league is comprised of a 12 week season.  The program will begin with a two week clinic, run by our staff.  Player's skills will be evaluated and improved.  Upon the completion of the clinics, players will be divided into balanced teams and coaches will be assigned. 

The Slam Dunk League will involve seven games.  Games played on Sunday and weekly team practices held by coaches and monitored by staff.  There will be a round robin playoff with all teams qualifying for the final two weeks, crowning a champion.  T-Shirts and certificates for all participants.  Medals for runners up and trophies for champions. 

All children will improve their skills, receive equal playing time, and enjoy the competition of our league.

Hoop Heaven Spring Basketball Leagues

The JCC will enter teams into Hoop Heaven's Spring Basketball League based on interest. Games will begin in March and will run through mid June. Games will be played once a week at Hoop Heaven in Whippany and practices will be held 1-2 times a week at the JCC in West Orange.

Separate teams for boys and girls are formed as follows:

Grades 5 & 6
Grade 7 & 8
Grade 9 & 10
Grade 11 & 12

Hoop Heaven has a variety of league levels from recreation through competitive and each team will be placed according to their ability.

Fee includes: 8 regular season games and playoffs, practices, high school certified referees, scorekeepers and reversible mesh jersey.

Winter Travel Basketball Leagues

The JCC Teen Travel League is committed to enhancing ties between the JCC and surrounding communities. We will play other Essex and Morris County teams on Sundays at Hoop Heaven in Whippany. Practices will be held one night during the week at the Cooperman JCC in West Orange. All levels of play are welcome and teams will be entered into the appropriate age divisions. We are going for the championship!

This class will review the basics of basketball while also teaching offensive and defensive skills, proper rebounding and positioning, footwork and game like-situations.  This class is perfect for kids participating in the JCCs basketball leagues.

Beginning and Intermediate Golf Lessons

Come on out on the weekend and learn the fundamentals of golf in a fun relaxed atmosphere. We will cover the grip, aim, and stance. Through drills and exercises, the overall swing, including backswing, downswing, and follow-through will be acquired. Short game, including chipping, pitching, and putting will be worked on. Safety and etiquette will be stressed. Discussion will also touch on golf lingo (birdie, par, and bogey), equipment and rules.
Course taught by Lou Ruina, experienced teacher and golf pro at Millburn Municipal and East Orange golf courses of Short Hills, and Anchor Golfland in Whippany. Equipment will be provided, bring clubs if you have.   Classes will be held at the East Orange Golf Course in Short Hills in the spring, summer, and early fall. 


This class was developed to meet the needs and interests of preschoolers entering the martial arts. Students learn self-control, respect of others, discipline, coordination, flexibility, strength and conflict resolution through the use of non-aggression. Class size will be limited..

Intermediate Karate

Continue the development of body awareness and practical self-defense techniques, behavior and strategies. Prerequisite Karate.

Hakoah Sports Club and Hakoah Junior Sports Club

NHL Street

Exciting new indoor street hockey program sponsored by NHL.  NHL provides equipotent and staff training manuals.  Devils alumnus and mascot will visit one during the semester.  Devils promotional items given away.  Program led by JCC staff.


The specific training elements covered in this class include:  Individual technical development: focuses on individual skills, increases the level at which each player understands the game and involves the full range of individual skills, experimenting with positions in scrimmage games.  Enhances the ability of the players to pass, dribble, turn, control, head and shoot.
Decision making: work towards helping players make their own decisions more quickly and more consistently enabling them to perfom better at higher levels.
Physical Preparation:  all round physical development.  Incorporating speed agility work, speed hurdles, parachutes.  Designed to make a quicker, stronger and more agile player.
Evaluation:  involves players providing a self-evaluation of their progress analyzing their performance of skills.  The goal is to help players understand how to evaluate and assess components of their performance to improve their play.

Stick Sports

This class will feature a variety of sports including waffle ball, lacrosse, hockey and tennis. If your child loves sports and being active then this is the class for them. Appropriate skills will be taught for each sport. Class will emphasize teamwork and having FUN!


Students are taught ground strokes, volleys and serves. Scorekeeping is introduced by playing singles and doubles. Other games are played to build motor skills and provide healthy competition.


It's fun and creative. It builds self-esteem and confidence. It increases concentration and attention. It's Kids Yoga! Through music, games, stories, and laughter, your child will discover the magic of yoga. Classes divided according to age.


Simple dances and creative movements done to Latin music in a fun and educational environment.

The JCC offers individualized and custom training for the athletes in your family.  Our Sports Specific Training packages are perfect for all ages and skill levels.  Whether you are looking to stay in shape in the off-season, working toward an upcoming tryout, or seeking to improve your all-around performance, our Sports Specific Training is designed around each athlete's specific goals and abilities. 

 The training benefits of one-to-one or small group numbers include:
