Aquatic Group Exercise

Why choose Water Exercise?

The water’s unique properties allow the pool to provide an environment for people of all abilities.  Buoyancy creates a reduced impact exercise alternative that is easy on the joints, while the water’s resistance challenges the muscles.  Water lends itself to a well-balanced workout that improves all major components of physical fitness -- aerobic training, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility and body composition.

Water aerobics is often considered a low-intensity workout program appropriate only for pregnant women or the elderly. However, water aerobics actually offers multiple benefits for any fitness level. Water aerobics classes come in a variety of formats.

Low Impact

Exercising in water makes you feel about 90 percent lighter, reports the American Council on Exercise. When you jump or run in the water, your body does not experience the same impact that these moves cause on land. This makes water aerobics an ideal activity for those with arthritis, back problems, foot or leg injuries, and knee conditions. Pregnant women and the obese also benefit from the reduced impact.

Calorie Burn

Expect to burn between 400 and 500 calories per hour in a water aerobics class. The actual amount you burn will depend on your size, the intensity of your movements, as well as water temperature and depth. In general, faster movements incorporating the upper and lower body in deep water elicit the greatest calorie burn.

Strength

When exercising in water, you work against 12 times the resistance of air. Simply kicking and cupping the water helps contribute to muscle development, which translates into a higher metabolism and healthier body.

Aquatic Group Exercise Class Descriptions

ARTHRITIS FOUNDATION AQUATIC PROGRAM (AFAP) - A water exercise program designed for people with arthritis and related conditions. Water exercise is especially good for people with arthritis, because it allows you to exercise without putting excess strain on your joints and muscles. It gives you the opportunity to do gentle activities in warm water, with the guidance from a certified instructor from the NJRAC and the Arthritis Foundation.
 
HIIT AQUA BOOT CAMP  (Hgh Intestiy Interal Traning)- this class combines interval/circuit training wth cadiovascular and core conditioning as well as strength training. Great for cross training. Knowledge of basic swimming and comfort in deep water required. 
 
AQUA CARDIO BLAST - Aqua cardio blast is all about matching the music and the moves. Pump up your heart while we pump up the jam..
 
AQUA INTENSITY - This is an INTENSE and invigorating cardiovascular workout in the water with an emphasis on abdominal strengthening and toning. Equipment may be used.
 
AQUA PILATES -These new aqua exercises challenge your stability, core strength, and develop your breathing in a way that traditional Pilates cannot.
 
AQUA POWER - A fast paced cardio, core and resistance class. We promise to power up your workout! Suitable for all level; just go at your own pace.  
 
AQUA STRENGTH - Rethink your workout and include a day (or two) of cross training in the pool! Experience resistance training and work your muscles by using the resistive properties of water. You do not need to be a swimmer, but you must be comfortable in deep water.
 
AQUA TABATA - A high intesity inteval exerise clss that altrnates 20 seconds of high intensity followd by 10 seconds of less intense eoverfor8rvs.The sciennce behid the workout suports metabollism increase of 17 pecent over a 24hr.period A sustainable energetic workout this is a class for the coditioned participant. Deep and shallow water combinaton.
 
AQUA ZUMBA ® -Integrating the ZUMBA formula and philosophy with traditional aqua fitness disciplines. This class blends it all together into a safe, challenging, water-based workout that’s cardio-conditioning, body-toning, and most of all, exhilarating beyond belief.
 
CARDIO POOL PARTY - A high energy water workout which uses weights and has an emphasis on increasing core strength and buildng muscle.
 
WATER YOGA - Yoga in the pool you say? Yes it’s true as water buoys up the body and makes balancing poses easier than on land. This class is for everyone, especially for those who have not had a good experience in standard Yoga class with intimidating postures.
 
YOGAEROBICS - This class uses the ancient practice of Yoga to create a great aerobic
water workout.

Metro Marlins Swim Team

Dear Marlins,

Thank you all for an amazing Fall/Winter season. We are so happy that many of you have continued swimming with us this spring. We are working a LOT on stroke technique. The swimmers are really improving their strokes and during practices we often have kids watch each other’s strokes, watch video clips of Olympic swimmers, have the coaches get in the water with the kids, and more!!

For those of you who are taking a break we will be opening registration for next year's Fall/Winter season in early August. Stay tuned for more details.

Metro Marlins Swim Team

The JCC Metro Marlins Swim Team is a comprehensive competitive swim program. The program's mission is to enhance and progress swimming skills while developing self-respect and discipline, sportsmanship, and commitment through healthy competition. The team is co-ed, with swimmers of varying skills and abilities from the ages of 5 through high school.

JCC Metro Marlins Swim Team focuses on stroke technique and endurance training. During the Fall/Winter season we will have 4 to 5 duel meets and 2 to 3 league meets.

All Metro Marlins Swim Team members are expected to participate in away meets by traveling to other JCC hosting swim team. These teams are all located within about an hour drive or less of our facility. All Metro Marlins Swim Team parents are expected to participate by volunteering to help host and run home swim meets, and other team building and social events.

During our Spring season we focus on breaking down all four competitive stokes and working on stroke technique and efficiency.

Metro Marlins
Competitive Swim Team

The JCC Metro Marlins is a competitive and fun swim team that focuses on stroke technique, swimming appropriate yardage, positive sportsmanship, and competition. Swimmers will have the opportunity to practice up to 6 days a week at the designated timeframe and will be assigned to lap lanes according to age and ability. For more competitive swimmers, USA swimming will be available at an additional cost which will incorporate dry land training and additional swim meets.

Swimmers should register for their practice times according to their age as of November 1, 2013. 

Swimmers train and compete together and enjoy the team building experience. Practices focus on correct stroke mechanics, high endurance and aerobic training, and personal growth.

 

Registration for the 2014-2015 Season will open in early August. Returning swimmers should register through the Customer Portal by clicking on the blue box at the top of this page.

Monday throught Thursday practice for 10 and under will be 5:00 to 6:15pm and for 11 and older will be 6:00 to 7:30pm.

JCC MetroWest is proud to offer the following Arthritis Foundation Classes.

With Arthritis Foundation programs, you can strengthen muscles, improve flexibility and boost your mood and self-confidence. Taught by nationally certified instructors, the Arthritis Foundation's Life Improvement Series empowers people with arthritis through aquatic, exercise and self-help programs that are proven to increase mobility, reduce pain and stiffness, and physician visits.

Masters Swim Program

Masters Swim Program

This program is designed for adults in college and older to provide fun, fitness, and optional friendly competition in a positive environment of athletic encouragement. The tone of the program is motivating and interactive.

Swimmers are assigned to lanes with others of similar ability, and workouts are adjusted according to the experience and ability of swimmers in each lane.

A willingness to participate and to demonstrate respect for coaches and fellow swimmers, is required. Coaches Don and Mel Fink have particular experience in coaching, motivating and developing adult athletes. Learn proper techniques and train for competition, or join for fun and exercise all while you meet with other adults and work-out.

For swimmers with Full Center Memberships, who do not want to follow a structured workout, please check the pool schedule for lap swim availability.

Scuba Diving with Underwater Adventures

Have you ever wanted to try scuba diving?Underwater_Adventures_Logo

Learn how to dive and enjoy the wonder and beauty of the underwater world on your next vacation! JCC MetroWest has teamed up with the Underwater Adventures Dive Center to bring the amazing world of scuba diving to you. Certified PADI instructors will make this program a safe and fun experience.

There are three steps to completing the course:

Step 1 • Academic Combination of independent study and classroom review. The first
class of each session will start with an orientation at Underwater Adventures.

Step 2 • Pool Sessions Learn and practice diving skills at the Cooperman JCC

Step 3 • Open Water Training Demonstrate the skills and explore diving in a controlled
open water environment. After completing the course, you will receive a PADI Certification Card, which will allow you to dive anywhere in the world.

Program fee includes the cost of the class and class materials. It does not include the purchase of mask, fins and snorkel.

Preskills Test - Monday, April 28, 2014 at 5:30pm (please meet on the pool deck). Registration is required. Once you pass the preskills we will email you a deep link so you can register for the online portion of the course. At this time you will need to use a credit card and pay a $35 nonrefundable registration fee to the Red Cross and we will process the balance of your payment to the JCC as follows:

JCC Member $275 • Guest $350 (does not include the $35 registration fee that is paid to the American Red Cross.)

Blended learning combines online learning with on-site skills sessions where you will practice skills and demonstrate competency. Please plan to complete the initial online lessons of your training at least two days prior to your first on-site skills session which is scheduled for Sunday, May 4 - 1pm to 6pm.

In order to complete the online portion of the course you MUST register with the American Red Cross after you pass the preskills session

   Prerequisites:         

  • Must be 15 yrs old by the last scheduled date of the course.

Pre-skills (for both full and review classes):

  • Continuously swim 300 yds. demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may use front crawl, breast stroke or a combination of both but swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Swim goggles may be used.
  • Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs. Candidates should place their hands under the armpits.
  • Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds.
  • Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed.
  • Surface dive, feet-first or head-first, to a depth of 7-10 feet to retrieve a 10 lb. object.
  • Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object and keeping the face at or near the surface so the are able to get a breath. Candidates can not swim the distance underwater. Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.

Completion of all on line materials prior to each class and attendance at all sessions is mandatory.

Certification: American Red Cross certificate for Lifeguard Training/First Aid/CPR/AED: valid for 2 years.

NEW - Blended Learning Lifeguard Training Review
May 19 to 22, 2014  - Three Day Class

Registration for this class will close on Monday, May 12 to allow all participants time to register with the Red Cross and complete the on line session prior to Monday, May 19. Preskills Test: Monday, May 19 at 5:30pm. (Meet on the pool deck) Course Session will follow immediately after the Preskills testing.

Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, May 19, 20 & 22 from 5:30pm to 9:30pm

Must bring completed on line progress report, current certifications, and pocket mask to the first class.

JCC Member: $100 - Guest $125 (does not include the $27 registration fee that is paid to the American Red Cross.)

All Lifeguard Training Participants will need to bring a modest swim suit and towels.  Attendance at all sessions is mandatory. Please bring water bottles, snacks and lunch if appropriate for your class schedule.

Upon successful completion of required skills, students will be certified to teach a variety of classes for infants through adults. The class also includes the American Red Cross Fundamentals of Instructor (FIT) Training course. 

Prerequisites:

  • Participants must be 16 by the completion of the course. Please bring proof of age to first class.
  • Demonstrate the ability to perform the following swimming skills:

    • 25 yards each of Front Crawl, Back Crawl, Breast Stroke, Elementary Backstroke, and Side Stroke.
    • 15 yards of Butterfly.

Maintain position on back in deep water and treading water for 1 minute each

Attendance at all sessions is mandatory.


Lifeguard Instructor
Ages 17-Adult

JCC Member $275 • Guest $350 (does not include the $35 registration fee that is paid to the American Red Cross.)

This course is for those who wish to train and certify others in Lifeguard Training and CPR/AED for Lifeguards. Will include training in AED, Emergency Oxygen, and Preventing Disease Transmission. Participants must be 17 by the completion of the course. Please bring proof of age to first class. You will need to bring a modest swim suit and towels.
Prerequisite - Fundamentals of Instructor Training (FIT)

Class Dates:
Tuesday - Friday, May 27 to 30, 2014 
10am to 5pm

Prerequisites for Instructor Candidates

  • Be at least 17 years old on or before the last day of the instructor course. 
  • Possess one of the following:

    • A current American Red Cross certification for Lifeguarding/First Aid and either and American Red Cross certification for CPR/AD for the professional Rescuer or an American Red Cross certification for CPR/AED for Lifeguards. 
    • An equivalent certification from another organization. 
  • Successfuly complete the Online Session for the Lifeguarding Instructor course, which consists of the following:

    • Orientation to the American Red Cross
    • Orientation to the Lifeguarding Instructor Course and Precourse Exam
  • Successfully complete the Precourse Session. 
  • Obtain the Lifeguarding Instructor's Manual after you have successfully completed the Precourse Session.

Private Swim Lessons

While our Swim classes are open to all members of our community we reserve participation in private and semi-private swim lessons to our Full Center Members. Should you wish to purchase a JCC Membership, we offer many options so you can select the one that best suits your family situation.
 
If you are a full center member and decide to enroll in private swim lessons, please let us know something about your children’s swim level and goals as well as the days and times of day that they would be available to come for swim lessons. This will help us find appropriate instructors and pool space.

Registration is easy as 1—2—3—4:
 
  1. All you have to do is click on “Register” next to the desired evaluation time and you will be brought to our secure, online registration form.
  2. Completing this form one time will create a new customer account that you will be able to access 24/7 from the comfort and privacy of your home or office. Once you register for your evaluation you will receive an immediate email confirmation.
  3. Evaluations are needed for all Preschool and Grade School participants to ensure proper placement in the appropriate swim level. All evaluations are complementary 15 minute sessions.
  4. After your child is evaluated by one our American Red Cross Certified Water Safety Instructors, we will contact you to register for a day and time from our class listing that fits your schedule.
You can access your customer account at any time to review your Family Account information including contact and billing information, and enrollments. For more information or additional assistance please contact the Aquatics Department at aquaticsinfo@jccmetrowest.org. 

Please Note: Entry and advancement into any class will only be permitted with advance approval by Senior Aquatic Staff.

For our Summer Swim Programs we require new Preschool and Grade School participants enrolling in our seven week program to be evaluated to determine their appropriate class level prior to registration. 
Participants enrolling in our Summer Splash Weekday Programs will be evaluated the first day of class and placed in an appropriate swim group. 

All evaluations are complementary 15 minute sessions and can be scheduled on line on the Preschool or Grade School webpages or by contacting us at aquaticsinfo@jccmetrowest.org or calling 973-530-3515.
*Evaluations are not needed for Parent/Child or Adult Learn to Swim Classes.
