Why choose Water Exercise?

The water’s unique properties allow the pool to provide an environment for people of all abilities.  Buoyancy creates a reduced impact exercise alternative that is easy on the joints, while the water’s resistance challenges the muscles.  Water lends itself to a well-balanced workout that improves all major components of physical fitness -- aerobic training, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility and body composition.

Water aerobics is often considered a low-intensity workout program appropriate only for pregnant women or the elderly. However, water aerobics actually offers multiple benefits for any fitness level. Water aerobics classes come in a variety of formats.

Low Impact

Exercising in water makes you feel about 90 percent lighter, reports the American Council on Exercise. When you jump or run in the water, your body does not experience the same impact that these moves cause on land. This makes water aerobics an ideal activity for those with arthritis, back problems, foot or leg injuries, and knee conditions. Pregnant women and the obese also benefit from the reduced impact.

Calorie Burn

Expect to burn between 400 and 500 calories per hour in a water aerobics class. The actual amount you burn will depend on your size, the intensity of your movements, as well as water temperature and depth. In general, faster movements incorporating the upper and lower body in deep water elicit the greatest calorie burn.


When exercising in water, you work against 12 times the resistance of air. Simply kicking and cupping the water helps contribute to muscle development, which translates into a higher metabolism and healthier body.

Aquatic Group Exercise Class Descriptions

ARTHRITIS AQUATIC PROGRAM - A water exercise program designed for people with arthritis and related conditions. Water exercise is especially good for people with arthritis, because it allows you to exercise without putting excess strain on your joints and muscles. It gives you the opportunity to do gentle activities in warm water, with the guidance from a certified instructor.
HIIT AQUA BOOT CAMP  (Hgh Intestiy Interal Traning)- this class combines interval/circuit training wth cadiovascular and core conditioning as well as strength training. Great for cross training. Knowledge of basic swimming and comfort in deep water required. 
AQUA CARDIO BLAST - Aqua cardio blast is all about matching the music and the moves. Pump up your heart while we pump up the jam..
AQUA INTENSITY - This is an INTENSE and invigorating cardiovascular workout in the water with an emphasis on abdominal strengthening and toning. Equipment may be used.
AQUA PILATES -These new aqua exercises challenge your stability, core strength, and develop your breathing in a way that traditional Pilates cannot.
AQUA POWER - A fast paced cardio, core and resistance class. We promise to power up your workout! Suitable for all level; just go at your own pace.  
AQUA STRENGTH - Rethink your workout and include a day (or two) of cross training in the pool! Experience resistance training and work your muscles by using the resistive properties of water. You do not need to be a swimmer, but you must be comfortable in deep water.
AQUA TABATA - A high intesity inteval exerise clss that altrnates 20 seconds of high intensity followd by 10 seconds of less intense eoverfor8rvs.The sciennce behid the workout suports metabollism increase of 17 pecent over a 24hr.period A sustainable energetic workout this is a class for the coditioned participant. Deep and shallow water combinaton.
AQUA ZUMBA ® -Integrating the ZUMBA formula and philosophy with traditional aqua fitness disciplines. This class blends it all together into a safe, challenging, water-based workout that’s cardio-conditioning, body-toning, and most of all, exhilarating beyond belief.
CARDIO POOL PARTY - A high energy water workout which uses weights and has an emphasis on increasing core strength and buildng muscle.

JCC WATER WALKERS - Looking for a great aquatic workout? Leave your gym shoes in the closet and hit the pool for a walk in the water! Water walking burns more calories than walking on land and is a no impact way to strengthen your body. Join other JCC Full Center Members in Lane 1 of the Heyman Pool for this free program.Ongoing M-F 10:00-11:00am
WATER YOGA - Yoga in the pool you say? Yes it’s true as water buoys up the body and makes balancing poses easier than on land. This class is for everyone, especially for those who have not had a good experience in standard Yoga class with intimidating postures.
YOGAEROBICS - This class uses the ancient practice of Yoga to create a great aerobic
water workout.
